Caring your mango tree

Planting mango tree, growing and harvesting the delicious fruit is a dream of every grower. There is nothing more satisfying than harvesting your own product. Only your love to the plant and with your constant care and service plant will repay you with those juicy nutrient rich fruits.

You need to undertake essential caring step right from the moment of its plantation till the tree reaches its senescence period. To the gardeners out there who lacks knowledge on ways to take care of your mango trees, here are some activities I recommend doing.

1.     Care during plantation

During plantation one must ensure not to break the ball of soil. Mango plants come either in potted form or directly with the ball of earth from nursery. One need to be very attentive not to break the soil that is Hold up by the roots. After pit digging of recommended size the plant should be placed in pit with soil intact after careful tearing of those plastic pot if potted one. Breakage of soil disturbs the anchorage of freshly developed root and put extra stress on plants through the exposure of those newly formed roots which may result invasion of pests and ultimately, poor performance or may even results death.

Staking after plantation is necessary to prevent the breakage of union of grafted mango plant by wind, rain, or any other factors. Staking can be done by sticks, ensure it to be upright.

2.    Care after plantation

Grafted mango plant generally starts fruit bearing in 3 -5 years faster in comparison to those grown from seedling which usually takes at least more than 5 years to come to its bearing stage.

In the bearing stage plant requires essential micro and macro-nutrients which if timely not applied results loss in optimum fruit bearing capacity of mango tree.

Mango trees are applied with manure and fertilizers in the month of September and October before flowering occurs. Fertilizers are applied at 45-90 cm away from the main trunk of the plant forming a ring around plant following the canopy.

For fruit bearing mango tree:

Manure can be of organic as well as inorganic source. In case of Organic source i.e. Compost manure for an instance should be applied @ 50 kg per plant.

And for inorganic source Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) should be applied @ 932 gram per plant, Urea @ 1434 Gram per plant, and Murate of potash (MOP) @ 1134 gram per plant.

Mango trees are not free from incidence of insect-pest and Diseases.

Several pests like

·         Mango fruit borer

·         Mango Hopper

·         Mango stone weevil

·         Mango psyllid etc. are found to attack mango plants.

Similarly, Diseases like

·         Anthracnose

·         Powdery mildew etc. are seen to infest the mango trees.

It requires timely management interventions to reduce the predictable loss in the mango fruit production.

Management practices to be followed are:

·         For the management of mango fruit and stem borer, you can install pheromone lures or also kill them manually by either poking with sharp object in the holes where the larvae bores.

·         To manage mango hoppers, Stone weevils and Mango psyllid pesticides like Di-methoate 30% EC 1.5 millilitre(ml) per liter of water can be used as a spray solution. Or Malathion 50% EC @ 1.5 ml per liter of water can be applied.

·         You can collect and destroy the infested fruits and prune the pest incident branches. Also, it is better you use the resistant varieties of mango.

·         Furthermore, for diseases like Anthracnose and powdery mildew simple practice of pruning of diseased plant parts followed by its destruction can be done.

·         In severe conditions, for Anthracnose Copperoxychloride (Blitox 50%) can be applied 3-4 times before the monsoon initiation and flower bloom.

·         While in case of powdery mildew fungicides like kerathane 1 gram per liter of water or Carbendazim 50% WP 0.5-1 gram per liter of water can be applied once after full bloom of flower occurs then, followed by application for 2 or 3 times keeping an interval of 10- 12 days.
